What are your hours?

We are open  during class times.  Monday-Friday: 10 am-9 pm (with a break 2-5:30 pm);  Saturday, 10 am-5 pm.  We take breaks during the holidays and the months of December and August.  Be sure to check with us before coming over during those times.

What is your class cancellation policy?

Refunds are available until 48 hours before class start.  Teachers use that 48 hours to prepare materials for the students.  No refunds or transfers after class starts.

What happens if I miss a class?

Students sign up for Rehab — an open sewing session that takes place Saturdays, 10 am-1 pm, or register for Private Lessons.  These take place Tuesday-Saturday, 2-5 pm.

Why don’t you give refunds after 48 hours before class start?

Teachers are paid by the class.  They go to the expense of preparing materials and handouts.  To ask for a refund is to ask the teacher to return their pay and forego money spent, when they showed up prepared and ready to teach.  Many classes have a wait list.  When a student doesn’t show, they are taking a place that could have been occupied by someone else.  We routinely and happily give refunds when notified 48 hours before class start.

How many people do you have in a class?

Classes must have a minimum of four students.  Sewing classes have a maximum of eight.  Patternmaking and design classes have a maximum of ten.  Business classes have a maximum of fifteen.

Do you sell fabrics and notions?

Yes, we have a supply store.  We sell fabric consigned to us by local designers plus zippers, buttons, thread and other notions.  Our prices are low because of our low overhead.  We offer a 20 percent discount to current students. Hours for our supply store are the same as above.

Do you take credit cards?

Yes.  We take Visa, Master Card, American Express and Discover.

Do you sell gift certificates?

Yes.  We have suggested amounts on-line.  But you can purchase them over the phone, by mail or e-mail or in person for any amount you wish.  Gift certificates are good for one year from date of purchase and are redeemable for Portland Sewing classes and items from the Portland Sewing supply store.  For more, go to Gift Certificates.

What makes Portland Sewing different from other sewing schools?

We are apparel people teaching apparel people.  You learn from professionals.  All of our instructors have industry experience and are employed in the apparel industry.  We teach techniques used in the apparel industry.

Do you offer financial aid?

We aren’t supported by taxpayer dollars so we don’t have access to financial aid.  Instead, we keep our prices affordable.  Students take as many or as few classes as they wish.  You don’t have to take a required number of classes or any classes outside of their interests.  We don’t charge surcharges or tuition.  We make sure students get good value.

Can students get jobs after attending your classes?

Many students in our certificate programs have gone into internships and jobs in the apparel industry and are working for independent designers to major corporations.  Some have started their own retail stores.
